Iv been trying since Aug as well.
There dosnt seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel at the moment.
The industry all seems to be jobs for the boys structured at the moment.

I've been looking since November 1, 2008 . . . after Hurricane Ike came through our area, employment in the oil and gas sector declined drastically!

I would be interested in assisting in year end and audits and could work from home on a contract basis as well as a full time position.

I have been looking for a new job since the beginning of August too. I have spent the last 4 1/2 years working on the worlds largest LNG project as the Client's site safety lead. I didn't expect to be still looking for work, but I guess the downturn is deeper than everyone thought.
I am very well qualified and experienced so I don't really understand how the market works. I have quite a few contacts but even they are saying there is nothing about. On a positive not it is now January and there are a few projects kicking off.......we will see!

I guess everyone is affected. even myself in school am tempted to get discouraged with all the graduate offers that have turned me down. Not even Heriot Watt University's reputation can help me. But as one who doesn't give up I continue to venture deeper into the tunnel. There's either light or a dead end...I've come too far to turn back and I'm keeping my faith up for light at the end

if it's any consolation guys, it is very quiet in all sectors of industry at the moment. I have my own mechanical services company here in the uk with my own mobile welding rig, and have also worked in project/site management on construction projects, but it seems everything has ground to a halt, even on preplanned construction developments which should have been ongoing to 2017. I know welders, pipefitters & plumbers who have never been out of work in their lives who are now signing on. This year will be one of the hardest for the uk, in my opinion, and we can only wait until the proposed nuclear projects and wind farms start. Good luck to one and all, Ged.

Hi Ged.
Iv been out of work now since aug,and have never found it so hard to find work.
I am hoping that with the promised goverment windfarm money things will get moving again this year.
Fingers crossed.
Gareth.

I am in the same boat having come off a large Caspian based project in August the job market, both at home and abroad is dry to say the least. Needless to say, numerous applications have led to nothing, although with the new year brings new hope and there are some large projects starting to get off the ground, but i reckon they will be slow burners.

it's never been any different.

There was a period in the mid-70s to early 80s when the N Sea was crying out for labour of all sorts, but that bubble was visibly deflating by about 1982 and the 1985 oil price crash killed it entirely.

the oil industry is, I'm afraid, all about experience and versatility. I've changed speciality twice, and had one long period and several shorter ones doing something else altogether.

there are a limited number of very good career opportunities available to people who manage to tick the right boxes, but most people in the industry will end up doing contract work of various descriptions and this sort of up-and-down cycle will always be there.

there are huge pressures on entry-level positions of all sorts; many countries impose quotas on these for locals ( are you listening, Messrs Brown and Cameron? I thought not.. ) and there are less opportunities for incomers every year.

my advice to anyone trying to get into the oil industry is to get work experience of any sort, plus some kind of offshore experience, even if it's only as a deck-hand on a ferry. This will make a big change in how recruiters perceive you, and you wil get paid as well. I'd be pretty cynical about spending money on courses; once you have your BOSIET/HUET and medical, which you can't make a credible application without, I would feel that the only worthwhile courses are those provided by the companies themselves.

hello i have just signed up to this in a bid to try and find a foot in the door in the offshore industry.
Its taken me 2 years since passing my bosiet, medical greehand and norwegian sector, rigger/banksman tickets.
which cost a small fortune.
luckily i have had really tedious low paid agency work in the meantime.
I just hope some one out there may be able to help.

Hi Boys and Gals
Ally mech tech , just wanted to say Hi Offshore Dimension is right on the nail, this game has always been up and down like a hookers drawers and allways will be , when its busy you can earn some good dough, when it goes quiet you feel like a Leper nobody calls you back no replies to your CV its like you don,t exist anymore, but the pendulum allways swings back the other way then they,re all over you like a rash again, you just have to survive any way you can in the meantime it will change soon

Hi, Just back from living in spain for 5 years. I am a Pipefitter looking for work in the UK. Lost touch with my old mates who I used to travel with doing contract work- shetlands, aberdeen, fife, grangemouth etc. Does anyone know what or where that kind of work is now? Any advice welcome

Ok guys here is a few tips for you? Get an up to date CV that looks professional, research on google for up and coming economic news on the Oil and Gas industry and who has been awarded the contracts? There is alot of work in Africa for qualified pipefitter, welders etc. Also if you are interested in offshore....look at bluewater? This information that i have given is for honest people looking for employment and not for agencies/or other in regards to furthering their contacts. Please do not abuse my kind nature! Good Luck to all you Oil workers there is plenty of work, but most of it is now agency based!
