I have a 5 year Bachelor’s Degree in Applied and Environmental
Geology and I just made 3 years with a Mudlogging company, first
as a Mudlogger and now as a Data Engineer. I also have a 4 months
intensive course on Geographic Information Systems in which I
worked for some time, previously. I'd like to know other people's
opinions on career advancements.
Usually after having some good experience guys go to work as WSG,
but this depends greatly on the current demand and your own
experience. The money seems good (after some time 1000$/day,
sounds good to me) and they have 4 weeks on/ 4 weeks off (give or
take). I’m sure as a Junior WSG I would get much less, but I’m
getting 105 USD/day now and 1550 USD basic salary, so I guess it
wouldn’t be less than that anyway.
Lately I've been thinking of applying for a Master's Degree, but
I'm just not sure...I will need to quit my job to do it (I'm not
married and I don't have kids). I like working in the field, 4 or
5 weeks on and off, and wanted to keep it that way even with
another job. But after a Master's Degree may be I can only get
office jobs which I really wouldn't like at all...I like coming
back home and these jobs would, most likely, need me to relocate.
On the other hand a Master’s Degree might open up other
opportunities and bigger salaries in the future.
So I need all those experienced opinions out there about this
issue. Should I take a Master's degree? Would it be a good
option? Or should I apply for Wellsite Geologist and think about
it later?
